Miserere – Psalm 51 is one of the so-called penitential psalms and is used every year on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. It centers on the theme of guilt and forgiveness, and King David is considered the author. Three settings of the 51st Psalm form the basic framework of the program (Allegri, Brahms and MacMillan), with Gregorio Allegri’s “Miserere” probably being the most famous.
In paradisum
In paradisum is a Latin antiphon from the 7th or 8th century. It was part of the liturgy of death in the Middle Ages and was sung at the transition from life to death. Throughout liturgical history, In paradisum became a part of the exequies and is sung today as the coffin is escorted to the grave. The chant interprets dying as a transition, with the heavenly Jerusalem standing as an eschatological metaphor. Heavenly choirs escort the dying from this world to a new one.
In our concert program we build a bridge from the Christian world to the ancient world and meet Hypnos, Ker and Thanatos, all three children of Nyx (Night). They give their names to the three parts of the program and form the contextual framework.
